SAMe:
AKA S-adenosylmethionine
SAMe, much like Milk Thistle, assists in the production of glutathione which helps the liver rid itself of pollutants, chemicals and toxins. SAMe also assists the body in producing compounds such as dopamine, serotonin (neurotransmitters) and glycosaminoglycans (cartilage component). Studies show SAMe can be as effective as Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS). Though it takes longer to work – the benefits seem to last longer and it is considered safe. Rare cases of mild stomach upset or nausea have been reported. Good quality is essential. Destroyed by stomach acid, heat and moisture, SAMe is very sensitive. It is absorbed in the intestine so enteric coated tablets sold in blister packs are recommended. Effects may take days, up to 5 weeks to be noticeable.
Dosing and administration:
For best results, avoid giving within an hour of a meal and do not break tablets because this compromises the coating that protects SamE from stomach acids. If a tablet must be broken, discard the portion not given. Offer water to prevent throat irritation.
Large dog: 400 mg daily. Medium dog: 200mg daily. Cat and toy breed: 100mg daily.
